“I’m dreaming of a sane Christmas….”
4 Quick Tips to keep Christmas sane!
Christmas is one time of the year where we ALL are given permission to celebrate. We decorate our grey cities and, for a while, make our sensible world into a fairyland. This puts us into a lovely space for possibility.
Few people (except the insane) discuss their corporation’s 5 year plan on Christmas day! It is a sane day.
Here’s some ideas to KEEP it sane:
1. Beware People Pleasing
This quote from Alison Arngrim,
“Any idiot can be liked. It takes talent to scare the crap out of people!” is a great balancer for the plague of people pleasing.
It is enough work for mothers just to create a joyful day for their own families and they need to be rested and happy to achieve this.
Anything else is a bonus. Try to care more about what Christmas is like for you and your kids than about what other people think or want
In a world of diets and fads let yourself ENJOY your food.
Take the time to prepare dishes that are amazing and then enjoy every bite.
This will, in fact, actually help temper appetite because you are focused on the enjoyment and have permission to do so.
You won’t just be stuffing yourself with “anything” because its Christmas…you will be eating “awesome.”
3. Have Fun
Fanny Brice, “I’m a bad woman but I’m damn good company.”
Dawn French, “There are 2 types of women. Those who like chocolate and complete bitches.”
The art of bringing joy, excitement and enthusiasm to the day is powerful alchemy and makes it fizz! Choose good company and BE good company. Enjoy yourself!
Watch your kids, they do this par excellence!
Take a bit of their fizz and add it to your day and see how much fun it can become.
4. Create a New Tradition
Create what you want. If you are tired of roast duck at lunch try a massive Christmas breakfast or the beach or…
Do what you want, enjoy your life. Jan Sterling, “I don’t pray. Kneeling bags my nylons.”
Add to old traditions by creating a new one you want and then honor it, adjust as necessary and repeat.
This is how families get the unique traditions that tie them together.
And finally, Maya Angelou’s quote on how to deal with life and its ups and downs works well for Christmas!
“[Christmas] loves to be taken by the lapel and told, “I am WITH you kid. Let’s go!”
Hope you grab your Christmas by the lapel and have a great time!
