THE MOTHER’S DAY REVOLUTION
Mothers often feel powerless and worthless in a society that values power and wealth.
Consider these closing comments made by the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia in his address to the rich and powerful at the Banking & Wealth Summit:
“In the end, though, you can’t legislate for culture or character.
CULTURE HAS TO BE NURTURED, WHICH IS NOT A COSTLESS EXERCISE.
Character has to be developed and exemplified in behaviour.
For all of us in the financial services and official sectors, this is a never-ending task.”
Well now….
It sounds to ME like the Governor of Australia’s most powerful financial institution just acknowledged that mothers are bearing the cost of keeping the culture together.
He is saying that laws can’t develop the person.
He is admitting that they are losing an uphill battle as they try to “nurture culture” with hard bitten adults in the financial system.
The Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia has concluded that laws are useless in NURTURING (great word he picked) culture..
Because culture is woven in the heart and the mind.
It is mainly woven by women in care, in relationships, in the home and by Mothers.
Culture is nurtured by women and it is NOT a costless exercise.
Women and mothers bear the cost of developing a humane culture when they carry children, bear children, care for them and raise them.
It is a labour of love but it is also a labour that keeps our institutions, communities and society whole.
The most powerful who get high enough in the towers of privilege can see the frailties of those towers.
If the unpaid work that women do was seen as the essential base for all of our institutions and achievements we wouldn’t need a Mother’s Day.
The respect for the “nurturing of culture and character” would be accompanied by high pay, benefits, extended leave and ongoing honoring of those doing the work.
O hasten the day!
The Governor of the Reserve Bank knows the power of your work in nurturing culture.
May you know your own power today.
